Tips to Surviving the Silly Season

Christmas is the time to party, to entertain, to be entertained, to eat, indulge in a few drinks and eat some more.

Here are some great practical ideas and healthy food choices to ensure you survive the silly season and leap into the New Year feeling fabulous...

* Avoid skipping lunch if you are going to a party in the evening, you’re more likely to eat unhealthy snacks if you go to the party hungry. Instead have a chicken and salad, wholemeal sandwich for lunch, to sustain you.

* Go for small amounts of different party foods, try a variety of foods and tastes but only have a small portion of each.

* Avoid snacking on nuts, potato chips, lollies and chocolates that seem to be everywhere at this time of the year.

* Go for a walk, run or swim - try to increase your level of physical activity between parties and entertaining, you’ll feel great and get some much needed exercise.

* Avoid standing near the food table or kitchen entrance at a party, if you have to walk over to get the food, you will eat less.

* Go for the healthy options, prawns, oysters, skinless chicken, salads, vegetables and fresh fruit are all low in fat and good for you.

* Avoid take-away food in the busy period leading up to Christmas. Cook some lean Beef, Chicken or Seafood on the BBQ and serve with a tossed salad, it's quick and easy and much better for you.

* Go for a glass of water or juice between alcoholic drinks, it will keep you hydrated and you will feel better in the morning.

* Avoid drinking alcohol at every social occasion, especially if you have a busy calendar. Have an alcohol free day occasionally; you’ll feel better for it.

* Go for an energetic game with the kids after lunch. Play backyard cricket, throw the Frisbee or go for a swim. Kids love it when all the Adults get involved in play time.

Christmas is a time to enjoy good food; good company and have a good time. Eat a selection of healthy foods between parties and increase your level of physical activity and you’ll feel fabulous throughout the festive season and into the New Year.

Merry Christmas!
