Hospital Bag for Mum & Baby

UrbanBaby has compiled what we feel is the ultimate What To Take To Hospital List. Includes a comprehensive list for Mum and Baby. Lots of great ideas and hints collected from a range of mums, so just pick what suits you. Perhaps the most comprehensive (and sensible) list ever!

Hospital Bag For Mum

* 3 nightgowns or loose pajamas with front buttons for breast feeding (one to wear, one in the wash, one clean). Check how well the hospital is heated as winter weight nightgowns are often too hot.

* Loose casual clothes for wearing during the daytime.

* Nice going out outfit (Some hospitals give you a night out with your partner before you check out).

* Slip-on shoes (your feet may swell).

* Dressing gown and slippers.

* 2-3 maternity bras (crop tops are useful to wear at night instead of a bra - as they are more comfortable and will hold breast pads in place).

* Disposable panties or cheap comfy, grandma style 5 pack from Woolies or similar so you can throw them away rather than taking messy ones home to wash (they are probably less expensive and nicer than disposables).

* Breast pads (We found Pigeon brand to be the most absorbent disposable and Tommee Tippee are good washable ones. Hint - if you have loads of milk you could try cutting a maternity pad in half and using as an overnight breast pad).

* 2-3 packs of maternity pads (you need them even with a c-section).

* Hand cream - your hands will suffer with all the extra hand washing you will do (Crabtree & Evelyn barrier cream is great).

* Toiletries (whatever you normally use including makeup).

* Nail clippers & file (you may need to trim your nails to assist your baby with breastfeeding).

* Hair dryer - also used for drying stitches after a tear or episiotomy.

* Earplugs - especially if you are sharing a room.

* Baby care books - we recommend Baby Love by Robin Barker (a must have).

* Notebook and pen for recording thoughts, advice and gifts.

* Phone/address book.

* Mobile phone and charger - check with your hospital if allowed.

* Small clock or travel clock - for timing breast feeds and nappy changes.

* Metamucil or similar recommend by your doctor.
* Red raspberry leaf tea or tablets which help your uterus go back into shape.

* Breastfeeding/postnatal vitamins.

* Favorite snacks to nibble on during breastfeeding - fruit & nut mixes are great.

* Breastfeeding reference book.

* Breast pump - if this is your second baby you may prefer to use your own if needed. We recommend Avent Isis Breast Pump from our experience and feedback from customers this pump is as good, if not easier than electric breast pumps used in most hospitals.

* Breast Nurse Gel pack - great for when your milk comes through and Natal Nurse gel pack - helps sooth any perennial discomfort, both highly recommended by UrbanBaby.

For Baby

Most hospitals provide all you need for baby whilst you are there, so unless you are particularly fussing there is not much you need to take.

* Snappy Nappy - easier to use than nappy pins on the cloth nappies which are used in the hospital for baby's first couple of days.

* Dummies - you may not use them but it's great to have the option.

* Receiving blanket/wrap.

* Baby's going home outfit and newborn size singlet.
